We are registered tax agents and specialize in the taxation of Medical Professionals who are permanent residents or travelling in Australia on 482/407/494/186 Visas.

Taxation of Temporary residents is quite a specific area of Australian Tax law and in our experience the majority of tax agents/ accountants aren’t familiar with the correct preparation process. This has led to many incorrect returns being lodged, often leading to a lot smaller tax refunds being received, sometimes missing out on thousands. With 15 years of experience and thousands of 482/407/494/186 visa tax returns prepared, you know that through Doctor Tax you will get back every dollar of tax you as a Travelling Doctor in Australia is entitled to.
The Australian Tax System
If you earned income in Australia, you are required to lodge an income tax return for the income year ending 30th June by the 31st October in the same year (the Australian tax year runs from 1st July to 30th June). This is regardless of you being an overseas resident.
When Can I get my tax back?
Following the end of an income year, you can lodge your tax return from July 1. So whilst you are still in Australia, you can get some of the tax you have paid refunded to you.
I am about to leave….
If you leave Australia before the end of the next income year, we can still lodge your next income tax return for you even without you being in the country, just let us know when you are leaving and we will let you know the process.
How do I maximize the amount of tax I get back?
(please see FAQs for more in depth detail)
There’s no magic formula to getting more tax back than others, but there are a few things you can do to help yourself out;
Make sure you are in the country for 6 months or more* without break (no trips to NZ in between etc). This way you have more of a chance to be classed as an Australian ‘Tax’ resident (see faqs) and get much more favourable tax rates (thus more refund back). * this is in reference to the WHOLE time you are in Australia not just within the 12 month financial year period. If you are in Australia for less than 6months please contact us to discuss.
Make sure during your time in Australia working that you keep all your receipts that may be work related. These include the following;
- Medical board application and rego (ie AHPRA)
- Other Medical Organisations fees (AMC, GMC)
- Courses, equipment, books, journal subscriptions
- Laptop
- Broadband and Mobile (very small work related % allowed)
- Indemnity or Income protection insurances
- Union fees
Remember, that you can only claim for expenses that were incurred during your working time in Australia. For instance, if you worked in 2025, you can claim for things such as annual renewals, subscriptions, licenses, etc, paid for during those months and also your monthly payments towards insurances during those months.
