We are rapidly approaching the end of the 2025 tax year (30th June). Just letting you know that if we did your return last year that we will be contacting you in the last week of June to notify you of all the details we will be requiring off you to produce your 2025 Australian Income Tax Return. Look out for it!

Departing Australia Superannuation Payments (DASP)

Doctor Tax can also assist you with getting the ball rolling in regards to Business 482/407/494/186 visa holders claiming their Aussie super back on departing the country. Once you have departed Australia, you can claim your superannuation if you visited on a temporary visa. Please be aware that Withholding tax, generally at a rate of 38% will be taken out of your super before it is paid to you.

Eligibility for DASP

You can claim a DASP from your super fund if all of the following apply:

  • you visited and worked in Australia on a temporary visa (excluding subclasses 405 & 410)
  • your visa has ceased to be in effect (is expired or has been cancelled)
  • you have left Australia
  • you are not an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or a permanent resident of Australia.

You can apply online for your super here: DASP online application system. Before you start have the following details ready:

  • passport number
  • name of your superfund and member number
  • your Australian Tax File Number

I’ve just become a Permanent Resident, what now???

Now that you have permanent residency, there are a few things you need to know;

  1. As soon as you become a permanent resident, all your overseas income now is added in your Aussie tax return (ie bank interest, share dividends, rental property income etc).
  2. Also, any assets you own overseas are now open to capital gains tax in Australia if you sell those assets (ie shares, rental property, etc).
  3. Australian Private Health insurance (hospital cover) is nearly a must have if your income is over $97,000.
  4. Income Protection Insurance in Australia is basically a must have also as its fully tax deductible. We can get you the best specialised Medical Professionals cover at the best rates due to our volume of work. Lets us know if you would like a quote on this.
  5. You can start looking at turning your Super into a higher performing vehicle than that of your current default hospital fund. You can discuss this with us at anytime.
  6. If you are looking at buying a home or investment property, we have access to a mortgage broking team (specialist home loans for Doctors) who are the best for Doctors, even when still on the 482/407/494/186. They can assist perm resident doctors or medical 482/407/494/186 VISA holders by allowing them to not only obtain a home loan but to lend as high as 90% LVR of the purchase price without incurring any Lenders Mortgage Insurance.
